As a rule for Pakistani homes: 1 ton cools a room up to about 150 square feet, 1.5 ton handles 150–250 square feet, and 2 ton suits 250–400 square feet. Above that, use a floor standing unit or two splits.
But our summers run hotter than the textbook assumes, so add half a ton if the room is on the top floor, faces the afternoon sun, has high ceilings, or regularly holds several people. An undersized AC runs constantly, never quite cools, and costs you more in electricity than the bigger unit would have.
What size AC do I need for my room?
Match your room’s floor area to the tonnage. Measure length × width in feet to get square feet — a 12×15 room is 180 square feet, so it needs 1.5 ton.
| Room size | Typical room | Tonnage | Live starting price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 150 sq ft | Bedroom, small office (10×12, 12×12) | 1 ton | Rs. 100,000 |
| 150–250 sq ft | Master bedroom, lounge (12×15, 15×15) | 1.5 ton | Rs. 115,000 |
| 250–400 sq ft | Large lounge, drawing room (16×20, 18×20) | 2 ton | Rs. 180,000 |
| 400 sq ft and above | Hall, showroom, open-plan space | Floor standing, or two splits | Rs. 238,000 |

When to size up (and this matters here)
Standard tonnage charts are written for milder climates. Our summers push past 45°C in much of the country, and a unit sized to a textbook chart will run flat out all afternoon without ever reaching the temperature you set. Add roughly half a ton if any of these apply to your room:
| Condition | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Top floor or roof directly above | Heat soaks through the ceiling all day and radiates at night |
| West or south facing with afternoon sun | Direct sun through windows adds a large heat load |
| Ceiling higher than about 10 feet | More air volume to cool than floor area alone suggests |
| Room regularly holds 4+ people | Every person adds body heat the AC must remove |
| Open to a kitchen, or large glass windows | Cooking heat and glass both raise the load significantly |
The costly mistake is undersizing. People buy a 1 ton for a 200 square foot room to save money upfront. It then runs continuously, never satisfies the thermostat, wears out faster and uses more electricity than a correctly sized 1.5 ton that cools the room and then idles. Oversizing by a huge margin isn’t ideal either — it cools in short bursts and dehumidifies poorly — but in our climate, erring half a ton large is the safer error.

AC ton meaning — and how to calculate tonnage
A “ton” in air conditioning has nothing to do with weight. It’s a measure of cooling power: one ton removes 12,000 BTU of heat per hour. So a 1.5 ton AC removes 18,000 BTU per hour, and a 2 ton removes 24,000.
Here’s how to calculate AC tonnage yourself: the working rule for our climate is roughly 80 BTU per square foot — higher than the 20–25 BTU used in temperate countries, because of our heat. Multiply your room’s square footage by 80, then divide by 12,000 to get tons. For a 180 square foot bedroom: 180 × 80 = 14,400 BTU, divided by 12,000 = 1.2 tons, so you round up to 1.5 ton. Then apply the adjustments above for top floor, sun exposure and occupancy.
Does inverter change the tonnage you need?
No — tonnage is about the room, not the technology. But an inverter AC does change how that capacity is delivered. A non-inverter unit runs at full power then switches off, cycling repeatedly. An inverter varies its compressor speed, running gently once the room is cool, which uses substantially less electricity over a long summer and holds a steadier temperature. It’s also far friendlier to a UPS or solar setup during load-shedding, since the running draw is lower than the startup surge of a conventional unit. Size the AC to your room, then choose inverter for the running cost — inverter models start from Rs. 82,000.
AC tonnage: FAQs
What room size does a 1 ton AC cover?
The 1 ton AC room size limit is about 150 square feet — it comfortably cools a room up to that size — a standard 10×12 or 12×12 bedroom or small office. In our summer heat, if that room is on the top floor or gets strong afternoon sun, step up to 1.5 ton instead. 1 ton units start from Rs. 100,000.
What room size does a 1.5 ton AC cover?
The 1.5 ton AC room size range is roughly 150–250 square feet, such as a 12×15 or 15×15 master bedroom or lounge. It’s the most commonly bought size in Pakistan because it fits the majority of family bedrooms and living rooms.
How many square feet does a 2 ton AC cool?
The 2 ton AC room size range is about 250–400 square feet — a large lounge or drawing room. Beyond 400 square feet, a floor standing unit or two separate splits will cool far more evenly than one oversized wall unit.
Is it better to buy a bigger AC than needed?
Slightly bigger is safer than slightly smaller in our climate. An undersized AC runs constantly without reaching the set temperature and uses more electricity than a correctly sized one. A vastly oversized unit cools in short bursts and removes less humidity, so aim for the right size, and round up by half a ton when in doubt.
Does ceiling height affect AC tonnage?
Yes. Tonnage charts assume a ceiling around 10 feet. If yours is higher, the room holds more air to cool, so add roughly half a ton — the same adjustment applies to rooms with large glass windows or an open kitchen.
Can I buy an AC on installments?
Yes. We offer zero down payment EMI through Bank Alfalah, JS Bank and MCB credit and debit cards, with a fully automated checkout — helpful for spreading the cost of a larger unit. A bank markup applies, so the total is a little above the cash price, but there’s nothing to pay upfront. Cash on Delivery is available too.
