How a solar air conditioner works

A solar air conditioner is not a different machine inside. It is an inverter AC tuned to live with solar power. Your panels feed a solar inverter, and the solar inverter feeds the AC on normal 220 volt power.

What makes it solar friendly is how it draws that power. It starts softly instead of pulling a big surge. It keeps running across a wide voltage range when a cloud passes. Many models also let you cap their draw with an ampere lock or a power limit, such as EcoStar’s 5-step power limit, so the AC never asks for more than your panels give. That is also why people call it a solar inverter AC or a solar powered air conditioner.

How many solar panels are required for a 1.5 ton AC?

The usual solar panel setup for a 1.5 ton AC is about four 550 watt panels, roughly 2.2 kW, enough to run an inverter model through a sunny day on its own. Treat that as a typical estimate, not a fixed rule.

Here is the simple arithmetic behind it. A 1.5 ton inverter AC draws roughly 1,400 to 1,800 watts while it pulls a hot room down. Once the room is cool it settles much lower. A 550 watt panel rarely gives its full label output on a hot, dusty afternoon, so count on about 400 watts from each. Divide about 1,600 watts by 400 watts and you get four panels.

Add panels if the same system also runs your fridge, fans or a water pump. Check that your solar inverter is rated comfortably above the AC’s draw. Your installer should confirm the final number for your roof, your panel brand and your hours of sun.

A 1 ton inverter AC needs less: about three 550 watt panels, roughly 1.6 kW, for daytime running on its own. The same logic applies. It draws roughly 1,000 to 1,200 watts at full speed, and each panel gives about 400 watts in real summer sun.

Panels alone cannot run any AC after sunset. For evening use you need the grid or a battery bank. Batteries big enough to run an AC through the night cost a lot, so most homes run the AC on solar by day and on the grid at night.

A 1 ton solar AC costs Rs. 113,000 to Rs. 121,000 in Pakistan today. It suits a normal bedroom of about 12 by 12 feet. It is also the easiest solar AC to carry on a small home system, because three panels can usually run it in good sun.

If the room is on the top floor, step up to 1.5 ton. A 1 ton AC that runs flat out all afternoon uses more of your solar power than a 1.5 ton running slowly.

A solar hybrid AC takes power from panels and from the grid at the same time. When the sun is strong, most of the power comes from the panels. When it fades, the grid quietly tops it up, so the room stays cool without you switching anything.

12 volt solar AC: is it the same thing?

No. A 12 volt solar AC runs directly on DC battery power and is made for vehicles, boats and small cabins. The solar ACs on this page are normal home inverter splits that run on 220 volt power from your solar inverter or the grid. For a house, a home inverter split cools far more for the money.

Running an AC on solar power in Pakistan: step by step

1. Size the AC to the room. 1 ton up to about 150 sq ft, 1.5 ton up to about 250 sq ft, 2 ton up to about 350 sq ft.
2. Count your spare solar power. Subtract what your fridge, fans and pump already use in the afternoon.
3. Add panels if needed. About three panels for 1 ton and four for 1.5 ton, as a typical estimate.
4. Set the power limit. On models with an ampere lock or power limit, match it to what your panels give.
5. Run it at 26°C. A steady 26°C lets the inverter run slowly, so the sun covers more of the load.
