In Pakistani homes two more matter enormously — proper earthing, which many older houses lack entirely, and voltage protection, because our supply swings far more than these appliances are designed for. Both are worth sorting before you worry about anything else on this list.

Earthing and voltage — the Pakistani essentials
Earthing first. A properly earthed socket sends fault current safely into the ground instead of through whoever is touching the appliance. Many older homes and rented portions here either have no earth connection or one that was never properly installed, and people only discover this when they feel a tingle from a fridge door or a washing machine body. If you feel any tingle from a metal appliance, stop using it and have an electrician check the earthing — that sensation is a fault, not normal.
Voltage second. Our supply fluctuates far more than these appliances are designed for, and the switch between mains, generator and UPS adds surges on top. A stabiliser on your refrigerator and other major appliances costs a fraction of the appliance and prevents the compressor and control board damage that voltage spikes cause. Many modern inverter appliances tolerate a wider range, but a stabiliser is still cheap protection.
If you smell gas
Do this, in order: turn off the gas at the valve or cylinder. Open doors and windows. Do not operate any electrical switch, light, or extractor fan — a spark is exactly what you’re avoiding. Don’t light a match or lighter. Leave the area and call a gas technician from outside the house.
Preventing it: check flexible gas pipes for cracks and replace them periodically rather than waiting for failure, make sure gas geysers and ranges have proper ventilation, and never sleep in a room with a gas appliance burning. Gas appliances consume oxygen and produce carbon monoxide when ventilation is poor — this is a genuine hazard every winter, not a theoretical one.

Why do I feel a tingle when touching my fridge or washing machine?
That’s a fault, not normal. It usually means the appliance isn’t properly earthed and a small current is leaking through the casing. Stop using it and have an electrician check the earthing and the appliance itself — a mild tingle can become a serious shock in wet conditions.
Do I really need a stabiliser?
For major appliances like refrigerators, it’s cheap insurance. Voltage fluctuation and the surges from switching between mains, generator and UPS damage compressors and control boards, and those repairs cost far more than a stabiliser. Many inverter appliances tolerate a wider range, but protection is still worthwhile.
What should I do if I smell gas?

How often should I clean grease from the hood and cooker?
More often than the manual suggests, because our cooking produces a lot of oil in the air. Wipe surfaces every few days and clean or replace hood filters every month or two during heavy use. Built-up grease is fuel for a fire and also makes an extractor much less effective.
Is it safe to use a multi-plug for kitchen appliances?
Not for high-wattage items. Microwaves, ovens, kettles and air fryers draw heavy current, and running several from one multi-plug overheats the wiring inside the wall where you can’t see it. Give each high-wattage appliance its own properly rated socket.
