A Metro electric geyser costs Rs. 26,350 to Rs. 31,050 in Pakistan today. These ME series tanks heat water with a 2,000 watt element only, so they work in any home, with or without a gas line.

They suit flats, upper portions and newer housing societies where Sui gas is weak or not connected. A 30 or 40 litre tank serves a couple or a small family, and the 50 and 60 litre models handle a family of four or five showering one after another. Fit it on its own breaker with an earth wire.

Which Metro geyser should you buy?

1. Check your gas. If your home has no gas line, or the gas fades every winter, pick an ME electric geyser. If you have gas most of the time, an MEG hybrid lets you use it and fall back on the element.
2. Count the people. One or two people need 30 litres, three or four need 40 to 50 litres, and five or more need a 25 to 35 gallon hybrid.

Running a Metro geyser on solar and through load-shedding

A 2,000 watt element needs about 2 kilowatts of spare solar output to heat at full speed. On a smaller system, run the geyser when other big loads such as the iron or the motor pump are off. A typical home UPS cannot run a geyser element, so heat the water while mains power or solar is available and let the insulation hold the heat.

During winter gas load-shedding, an MEG hybrid simply switches to its element. During electricity load-shedding, it can still heat on gas. That double backup is the whole point of a hybrid.
