For 5 people washing 4 loads a week, a 10 to 12 kg twin tub fits: about 13 cotton shalwar kameez a load, or a single blanket. It takes about 2,400 litres of water and 4 units a month, roughly Rs. 260 to run, with about 9 hours of hands-on work.
You fill it yourself by hose or bucket, so water pressure does not matter, and it is the lowest-cost way to wash a family’s clothes. The second tub spins clothes damp-dry for the line.

Water per load: twin tub about 14 litres per kg of capacity (wash tub plus two rinses), automatic top load about 13, front load about 6.5. Electricity per load: about 0.25, 0.35 and 0.4 units. A front load hot-water programme adds about 0.5 to 1.4 units a load for its heater. Hands-on time counts filling, moving clothes to the spin tub and rinsing, not hanging clothes out.
