The bigger gains are lower noise, which matters in an open kitchen, and the long motor warranty many inverter models carry. If you will run the machine every day, an inverter model is worth the extra price.

Is a dishwasher worth it in a Pakistani home?

For a busy family, yes. It saves half an hour or more at the sink every day, and it washes with water far hotter than hands can stand, so oily plates come out clean and hygienic. A full load usually uses less water than washing the same dishes by hand with the tap running.

It also handles desi cooking well if you load it right. Scrape bones, rice and leftover salan into the bin, then load the dishes as they are. Use the intensive program for oily karahis and pots with dried masala. Burnt food stuck to the bottom of a pot still needs a soak first. Haldi can tint plastic boxes, but steel, glass and ceramic come out clean.

Wash these by hand instead: cast iron tawas, wooden spoons and boards, good knives and non-stick pans that do not say dishwasher-safe.

1. Count your family. Two people need 8 place settings, three or four need 12, and five or more need 14 or 15.
2. Measure the space. A full-size machine needs a gap about 60 cm wide and 85 cm high. A countertop model needs counter space beside the sink.
3. Check the water and drain. You need a cold water tap within reach of the inlet hose and a drain point, the same as a washing machine.
4. Choose the motor. Inverter for daily use and lower noise, non-inverter to save money if you will run it a few times a week.
5. Look at programs. Intensive, eco, quick and half load cover most needs. More programs cost more but are not always used.

A dishwasher connects to the cold water supply, not to the geyser, because it has its own heater. It needs a tap with a hose connection, a drain or sink trap for the outlet hose, and an earthed socket close by. Many homes place it next to the washing machine, which already has all three.
