Split vs Floor Standing vs Cassette AC: Which Type Do You Need?

Quick Answer

For a normal room buy a split AC — cheaper, quieter, no floor space. For a large hall or drawing room, a floor standing (cabinet) unit throws air much further. Cassette units suit false ceilings in offices and are rarely right for a home.

Quick verdict

For a normal room, buy a split AC — it’s cheaper, quieter and covers almost every home need. For a large hall, drawing room or shop, a floor standing unit throws air much further. Cassette units suit false ceilings in offices and are rarely the right answer for a house.

Put simply: the size and shape of the space decides the type, not the brand. Most Pakistani homes need a split; you only step up to floor standing when a split physically can’t reach the far side of the room.

The three types

Types of air conditioner explained

All three cool the same way — the difference is where the indoor unit sits and how far it can push cold air:

Split units start from Rs. 82,000, and floor standing units from Rs. 238,000. Browse the full floor standing AC price in Pakistan and cabinet AC range, or see every split AC price in Pakistan option.

Which for your space

Floor standing AC vs split AC — which should you buy?

Choose a split AC for any normal room up to around 400 square feet — bedrooms, lounges, offices and shops of ordinary size. It’s cheaper to buy and install, quieter, uses no floor space, and the range of models, brands and tonnages is far wider. This covers the vast majority of homes.

Choose a floor standing AC — also called a cabinet AC here — when the space is large, long or high-ceilinged, and a wall split would leave the far end warm. Drawing rooms, open halls, showrooms and marquee-style spaces are the typical cases. It pushes air much harder and further, and because it stands on the floor it also suits rooms where you can’t drill high on a wall.

Choose a cassette AC only if you already have, or are building, a false ceiling — usually in an office, restaurant or commercial fit-out. It cools evenly in four directions and stays completely out of sight, but it needs ceiling work done properly and costs the most overall. It’s rarely the right choice for a home.

A note on cassette units

Cassette AC vs split AC — being straight with you

Honest position: cassette air conditioners are a commercial product. They make sense in an office, showroom or restaurant with a proper false ceiling, where you want cooling you can’t see and even distribution across a wide floor. For a house, they’re expensive, need structural ceiling work, and are harder to service — a split or floor standing unit will cool the same space for less with easier maintenance. We stock cassette units to order rather than on the shelf, so if you’re doing a commercial fit-out, call our helpline on 0333-5652643 and we’ll source the right capacity. For everything else, the two types below are what you actually want.

What matters in Pakistani homes

Three practical points. First, our drawing rooms and baithaks are often large, high-ceilinged and used for guests — that’s the classic case where a cabinet AC earns its cost, because a single split struggles to cool a long room in peak summer. Second, whatever type you choose, pick an inverter model: it varies compressor speed instead of switching on and off, which cuts the running cost substantially over a long season and is far friendlier to a UPS or solar setup during load-shedding. Third, get the tonnage right before you worry about type — an undersized unit of any kind will run flat out all afternoon and never satisfy the thermostat.

Brands, honestly

Which brands for split and floor standing?

Dawlance is the safest all-round choice across both types, with the widest service and spare-parts network in the country — it takes our top split and premium cabinet picks. EcoStar offers the best value in floor standing units and a strong split range. Haier and Gree are major names in splits with good inverter technology, and Orient and TCL compete hard on price. Mitsubishi sits at the premium end where available. For a split AC, Dawlance, Haier or Gree are the dependable answers; for a cabinet AC, Dawlance and EcoStar lead the range here.

Common questions

AC types: FAQs

Which is better, split AC or floor standing AC?

For a normal room, a split AC is better — cheaper, quieter, uses no floor space and available in far more models. A floor standing AC is better for large halls, drawing rooms and shops where a wall split can’t push cold air far enough. Choose by the size and shape of the space, not by which sounds more premium.

What is a cabinet AC?

Cabinet AC is the common local name for a floor standing air conditioner — an upright unit that sits on the floor rather than mounting on a wall. It delivers stronger, longer airflow than a split, which is why it’s used in halls, drawing rooms and commercial spaces.

Is a cassette AC good for a home?

Usually not. Cassette units are designed for false ceilings in offices, restaurants and showrooms, where hidden, four-way cooling matters. In a house they cost more, need proper ceiling work and are harder to service, so a split or floor standing unit is the more sensible choice for the same space.

Does a floor standing AC cool faster than a split?

In a large room, yes — it moves more air and throws it further, so a big space reaches temperature sooner. In a normal-sized bedroom there’s no real advantage, and a correctly sized split will cool it just as well for less money.

How many tons do I need for a large hall?

Above roughly 400 square feet you’re past what a single split handles comfortably, which is where a 2 ton or larger floor standing unit — or two splits — makes sense. Our AC tonnage guide works through room sizes and the adjustments for top floors, sun exposure and high ceilings.

Can I buy an AC on installments?

Yes. We offer zero down payment EMI through Bank Alfalah, JS Bank and MCB credit and debit cards, with a fully automated checkout — useful for a floor standing unit. A bank markup applies, so the total is a little above the cash price, but there’s nothing to pay upfront. Cash on Delivery is available too.
