How to choose a washing machine: step by step

1. Check your water. Open the tap where the machine will stand. Strong, steady flow means an automatic will work. Weak or irregular supply points to a twin tub or single tub.
2. Count your family. 6 to 7 kg for one or two people, 8 to 9 kg for three or four, 10 to 12 kg for five or six, and 13 kg or more for a large or joint family.
3. Pick the type. Semi-automatic for the lowest price and full control, automatic top load for hands-free washing, front load for the gentlest wash and the least water.
4. Think about power. In areas with long load-shedding, a semi-automatic simply carries on, and an automatic should have auto restart. Where voltage drops, use a stabiliser or a low-voltage model.
5. Plan the space. Measure width and depth, leave room to open the lid, and make sure a drain and an earthed socket are close by.

Water pressure, voltage and load-shedding
