Solar air cooler and 12 volt DC cooler: how they work

A solar air cooler is simply a cooler with a motor that runs on low-voltage DC power. In the day it can run from a solar panel, and at night from a 12 volt battery that the panel charges.

A 12 volt DC air cooler runs straight from the battery, so no power is lost in a UPS. AC/DC models switch between Wapda and the battery by themselves, which makes them the easiest choice for long load-shedding. An ordinary mains cooler cannot connect to a battery directly; it needs a UPS.

As a rough guide, a 100 Ah battery used down to half its charge gives about 600 watt-hours. That runs a 100 W cooler for about six hours, less if the same battery also runs fans and lights.

Air cooler or AC: which one do you need?

Buy a cooler if your summer heat is dry and you want low bills. Buy an AC if the room must stay closed or the air is humid. A cooler does not refrigerate; it adds moisture to cool the air, so it works best in dry heat and weakens on muggy monsoon days.

• Keep the water clean: drain and refill every few days so the tank does not smell or breed mosquitoes.
• Clean the pads: in hard-water areas, rinse the pads and brush off the white salt once or twice a season.
• Never run the pump dry: refill before the tank empties, or the pump can burn out.
• Stay safe: unplug the cooler before refilling and use an earthed socket with dry hands.
• Store it dry: at the end of summer, drain the tank, dry the pads and cover the cooler.
