Which type of fridge should you buy?

Double door (top freezer)

The classic Pakistani family fridge: a freezer on top and a larger fridge section below. It offers the most choice at every budget, from 8 to 20 cubic feet.

Best for: most homes.

Inverter

An inverter compressor speeds up and slows down instead of switching fully on and off. It uses noticeably less electricity, runs quieter and, on many models, starts at lower voltage, which helps during load-shedding and voltage drops.

Best for: lower bills and unstable power.

Direct cool or no frost

Most fridges here are direct cool: simple, efficient and affordable, but the freezer needs defrosting now and then. A no-frost fridge circulates cold air with a fan, so ice never builds up and cooling stays even.

Best for: no frost if you hate defrosting.

Side-by-side

A tall freezer on one side and a tall fridge on the other, usually no frost and inverter, often with a water dispenser or ice maker. It needs a wide space and a wide doorway.

What size fridge does your family need?

Electricity, voltage and load-shedding

A fridge runs all day, every day, so its running cost matters more than almost any other appliance. An inverter model costs more to buy but draws less power, and the saving adds up over the years. Look for a model labelled energy saver or inverter if your electricity bill is high.

Voltage is the other Pakistani problem. Many fridges now start at low voltage (often labelled LVS or low voltage startup), which lets the compressor start even when the supply drops in summer evenings. Where the voltage swings a lot, a good stabilizer still protects the compressor.

The compressor is the part that matters most, which is why most brands here give it a much longer warranty than the rest of the fridge, typically 10 years and up to 12 years on many Dawlance models.

Features worth paying for

  • Convertible freezer: models with several conversion modes can switch the freezer to a fridge when you need more cold space, for example in summer or Ramadan.
  • Humidity control: keeps fruit and vegetables fresh for longer in the crisper drawer.
  • Turbo or fast cooling: chills a fresh load of shopping or water quickly.
  • Digital control: lets you set an exact temperature from a display on the door.
  • Glass door: a toughened glass front that is easy to wipe clean and does not fade, now common from mid-range up.

Placing and caring for your fridge

Wait before switching on

After delivery or a move, stand the fridge upright for a few hours before plugging it in, so the compressor oil settles back where it belongs.

Leave room to breathe

Keep a gap of a few inches at the back and sides. A fridge pushed tight against a wall runs hotter, works harder and costs more to run.

Keep it away from heat

Do not place it next to a stove, an oven or a sunny window. A cooler spot saves electricity every single day.

Set the right temperature

Around 3 to 5 °C in the fridge and about −18 °C in the freezer keeps food fresh without wasting power.

Let food cool first

Putting hot food straight in raises the temperature inside and makes the compressor run longer. Let it cool to room temperature first.

Defrost direct-cool models

On a direct-cool fridge, defrost the freezer when the ice is about 3 to 5 mm thick. A no-frost fridge does this by itself.

Yes. “Fridge” is simply the short, everyday word for a refrigerator. Both names describe the same appliance, and every price on this page applies to both.

Which size fridge is best for a family of four or five?

A medium size double door of 11 to 16 cubic feet suits most families of four or five. Choose 15 to 18 cubic feet if you buy groceries weekly or store meat after Eid, and 20 cubic feet or more for large or joint families.

Is an inverter refrigerator worth it?

For most homes, yes. An inverter refrigerator costs more to buy but uses less electricity, runs quieter and often starts at low voltage. Because a fridge runs day and night, the lower bills usually repay the difference over its life.

What is the difference between a no frost and a direct cool fridge?

How much electricity does a fridge use?

It depends on size and type. A fridge runs in cycles all day, so small differences add up. An inverter model uses noticeably less than a conventional one, and keeping the fridge away from heat, leaving a gap behind it and not overfilling it all lower the bill.

What temperature should a fridge be set to?

Keep the fridge section at about 3 to 5 °C and the freezer at about −18 °C. That keeps food fresh and safe without wasting electricity.

Can I switch on a refrigerator right after moving it?

No. Stand it upright for a few hours first so the compressor oil can settle. Switching it on too soon can damage the compressor.
