It uses a fraction of the electricity of an air conditioner and needs no installation. The one honest caveat is below. Type decides where the cooler can go and how it is powered — the biggest choice after budget. Compare live prices by type:

Plastic coolers are the mainstream — light, rust-proof and the best value. Portable air coolers add wheels so you can move the cool from room to room. 12-volt DC coolers run off a battery and keep working through load-shedding — the reason many Pakistani homes buy one, though our DC and solar shelf is nearly empty at the moment (see the section below). Metal-body coolers are the old heavy-duty type, tougher but prone to rust. Nearly every model here ships with an ice pack to push the air colder on the hottest afternoons.

How an Air Cooler Works — and When It Does Not

A fan draws hot, dry air through a water-soaked honeycomb pad; the water evaporates, the air loses heat, and what blows out is several degrees cooler. This is the part no one selling you a cooler will say plainly: evaporative cooling works brilliantly in dry heat and weakly in humidity . Through most of a Pakistani summer — the dry pre-monsoon months — an air cooler cools a room for a fraction of an AC's running cost. Once the monsoon arrives and the air is already damp, the same cooler struggles, because damp air cannot take on much more moisture. Buy an air cooler if your summer is mostly dry, you cannot run an AC all day, or you need cooling that survives load-shedding on a battery. An air cooler is not an air conditioner — it does not refrigerate, and in humid weather it will not match one. Bought for dry heat, it is the cheapest real cooling there is.

Inverter, solar and 12 volt DC air coolers

Inverter air coolers run the motor on a variable-speed drive: much lower power draw, quieter, and easy to run off a UPS or solar setup. That is the part of this shelf we can actually supply, and it is what most people buying "for load-shedding" should be looking at — an inverter cooler on a UPS solves the same problem.

Solar and 12-volt DC coolers run directly off a panel or battery. Air cooler price in Pakistan by tank size

The water tank decides how long the cooler runs before a refill, and it roughly tracks room size. 40–50 litres suits a bedroom or small room; 55–75 litres is the volume choice for a living room or medium hall; 100 litres and above is for large halls, shops and open verandas that run all day. A bigger tank means fewer refills, not colder air — the cooling comes from the pad and fan, not the tank. Match the tank to how long you run it between fills, and the type to your room. Beyond type and tank, a few features decide how a cooler actually feels to live with. An ice pack — included on almost every model here — chills the tank water to push the air a few degrees colder on the hottest, driest afternoons. A remote lets you change speed and swing from your seat. Auto swing sweeps the air across the room instead of blowing at one spot. A honeycomb cooling pad holds water more evenly and lasts far longer than the old straw pads, so the cooling stays strong for years. None of these change whether evaporative cooling suits your weather — that is decided by humidity, not features — but they change the day-to-day comfort, and they are worth checking on the product page.
