Troubleshooting 5 Common Washing Machine Problems (Leaking, Noisy, Won’t Drain)

washing machine problems troubleshooting Pakistan

Quick Summary: Before you call for repairs, try these simple fixes. Won’t Drain? Check and clean your drain pump filter. Loud Noise? Your load is probably unbalanced; stop the machine and redistribute the clothes. Leaking? Check that your inlet and drain hoses are screwed on tightly. Smells Bad? Your machine needs cleaning (run a hot “Tub Clean” cycle).

A washing machine breaking down is a major household panic. But before you call a technician, the truth is that most “problems” are simple issues you can fix yourself in 5 minutes. This guide will walk you through the 5 most common washing machine problems and their easy solutions.

Safety First: Before you check *anything*, unplug your washing machine from the wall socket to avoid any risk of electric shock.

Problem 1: It’s Making a Loud Banging or Thumping Noise

This is the most common problem, especially during the spin cycle, and it’s almost always an easy fix.

✅ The Solution: Your Load is Unbalanced

A loud banging noise means the load inside the drum is not distributed evenly. This often happens when you wash one heavy item (like a single towel, a pair of jeans, or a bedsheet) with a few light items.

  1. Press the Stop/Pause button.
  2. Wait for the door to unlock.
  3. Open the door and redistribute the clothes. Untangle the items and spread them evenly around the drum.
  4. Close the door and resume the cycle. The noise should be gone.

Problem 2: The Machine Won’t Drain (Water is Left in the Drum)

This is the second most common issue. 99% of the time, it’s not a broken pump—it’s just a clog.

✅ The Solution: Clean Your Drain Pump Filter

Your machine has a small filter to catch lint, coins, and hair. When it clogs, the water can’t get out.

    1. Unplug the machine.
    2. Find the small panel at the bottom-front of your washer.
    3. Put a shallow tray and a towel underneath it (trapped water will spill out).
    4. Open the panel and slowly unscrew the filter cap, letting the water drain into the tray.
    5. Pull the filter out and clean all the gunk, lint, and any coins you find.
    6. Screw it back in *tightly* and close the panel.

Problem 3: The Machine is Leaking Water

A puddle on the floor is scary, but the cause is usually simple.

✅ The Solution: Check Your Hoses

First, check the back of the machine. There are two hoses.

  • 1. Inlet Hose: This is the hose screwed to your water tap. Check that both ends (at the tap and at the machine) are screwed on tightly. A loose connection is the most common cause of leaks.
  • 2. Drain Hose: Check the (usually gray) drain hose for any visible cracks or splits. Also, make sure it is securely placed in your wall’s drain pipe.

Problem 4: The Machine Smells Bad

If your clean clothes smell musty, it’s because your machine is dirty on the inside from mold and soap scum.

✅ The Solution: Your Machine Needs a “Tub Clean”

You need to clean the mold and bacteria you can’t see. The easiest way is to run a “Tub Clean” cycle. If you don’t have one, run an empty cycle on the hottest possible setting (90°C) with a washing machine cleaner or two cups of vinegar.

Also, remember to leave the door open between washes to let it dry out!

Problem 5: The Machine Won’t Turn On

You press the power button, and nothing happens. This is often an electrical issue, not a machine issue.

✅ The Solution: Check Your Power

  • Check the Plug: Is it plugged in firmly? Try plugging another appliance (like a phone charger) into the *same socket* to see if the socket is working.
  • Check the Circuit Breaker: Go to your home’s main distribution board. Has the breaker for your laundry area “tripped”? If it has, flip it back on. If it trips again immediately, you may have a larger electrical problem.
  • Check the Door: All machines have a safety lock. Is the door closed *firmly*? If the machine doesn’t think the door is locked, it will not start.
